If I Had Known

If I had known
I wouldn't have driven that road
If I had known
I wouldn't have dared go home

It was a flash of light before my eyes
Someone else had already died
I was not about to be that, was I

Barrels pointed through glass windows
Diamond my only protection
I closed my eyes
I had no weapons

My hands went up
The same surrender I submit
When in the throws of worship
I cried
This is how
My brothers and sisters all died

I cried Oh God!
And through the prism
Of unfallen tears
I studied his face

Pale with a frown like I was scum
Like he hated me
That's how he held his gun

Unflinching and unmoved
I met his eyes with mine
I sniffled as I cried
I closed my eyes

I've never felt life
like I felt that night!
I'd feel something
If I had known
